A taxi drives close to a red bus and from the inside of the cab a man hurls a phone to the red bus, at the entrance of Guatemala City's historic town centre. The phone most likely an instrument to extort the driver from one of the busy bus routes in the largest Centralamerican City.

The extortion business is run by different gangs, most buses pay different extortions on several points around the city. It is estimated that around 4 million USD are lost because of it. 83% of extortions where made via phone. 

33 bus drivers where killed until October 2018, 20 in 2017, 35 in 2016. Attacks on transport have left 2037 deaths from helpers passengers, riders, taxi drivers, tuk tuk drivers and bus drivers. Guatemala City is the 24th most dangerous city in the world in 2017 with a murder rate of 53.49 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to SEGURIDAD, JUSTICIA Y PAZ.
